Introducing Mixed With What?

If your answer to an inquiry about your ethnic background comes with a follow-up question, this podcast is for you. Mixed With What is a podcast that goes beyond the binary of Black and White, to have conversations in color with guests who require more than a single check box to report their racial identity.

Each week host Steph Stock, holds a mirror up to the future faces of America and reflects on what it means to be mixed in a country that’s mixed up about its race relations. From interracial couples, to multiracial individuals, with influential voices, and inspiring stories, Mixed with What ultimately asks the question, what future will America face when the future face of America represents a history that is neither separate nor equal?

Whether you identify as mixed or simply want to contribute to a more welcoming space for mixed people, join in this conversation about race, identity, and belonging as we dive deep into the question: Mixed With What?

Steph Stock:

The most recent census identified mixed race people as the fastest growing demographic in America. Today, over 33 million Americans check more than one box when asked about their ethnic identity. And even though the number of interracial couples getting together and making babies is higher than ever before, our country is still divided.

Steph Stock:

I'm Steph Stock, and I'm mixed with Black and White. These are two colors that don't represent an actual skin tone of a human being at all. But where I'm from identifying with one or both of these shades says a lot about who you are. My story starts in one of the most segregated cities in the United States. I'm a product of both the great migration and the Scandinavian settlement. My family history is equal parts industrial and agriculture, conservative and liberal, racist and abolitionist. The intersections of my own identity sparked my curiosity about how our personal histories fit into American history.

Steph Stock:

I'm born and raised in Wisconsin, currently living in LA. And my search for identity has sent me around the world to places like Brazil, Australia and beyond, to try and understand how migration has created mixed people like me, and what it means for the future babies.

Steph Stock:

When a global pandemic forces all to sit down and stay home, I reflected on my travels, my culture and my country. And I realized that I'm not alone in my struggle to claim an identity in a country that is separate and unequal.

Steph Stock:

Now admittedly, I have some discomfort with the term mix. Not because I find it offensive or even an accurate but because whenever I'm questioned about my identity, the response I'm mixed is never enough. The follow up question is always mixed with what?

Steph Stock:

So now I'm asking the question.

Steph Stock:

Tune in each week as I jump into conversations with people who embrace multiple identities, I will speak to people who have grown up in the gray areas of society and have conversations in color that go beyond the binary of black and white. We'll dive into individual stories that represent our collective history, and explore intersections of identity and discover a new language that depicts the future of what America looks like.

Steph Stock:

Episodes drop every Wednesday. You can listen on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you tune in to your podcast. Join the community by hitting me up on IG at stuff x dot and stay in touch while we mix things up. Each week, on Mixed With What?
